Scott leads comprehensive strategic growth advisory services for Stambaugh Ness, a national professional services firm with strategic focus on architecture, engineering, professional services, construction, real estate, and manufacturing industries. As Managing Director of the Strategic Growth Advisory Practice, he delivers marketing and business development consulting, strategic planning facilitation, fractional Chief Marketing Officer services, seller-doer coaching, and training programs that help AEC firms elevate their strategic and business development effectiveness.
His expertise spans strategic planning, business development strategy, marketing planning, seller-doer model development, communication and soft skills training, and fractional CMO services serving architecture, engineering, construction, and environmental firms nationwide. Scott brings specialized knowledge from 30+ years of comprehensive experience including serving as Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for JDB Engineering, where he successfully navigated the path from marketing coordinator to firm principal, shareholder, and owner before transitioning to consulting.
His multidisciplinary background encompasses marketing strategy, proposal writing, public relations, photography, historic preservation, and community development. As one of the AEC industry’s most prolific thought leaders, Scott has authored 20+ books and ebooks, written hundreds of articles for industry publications, and authors Marketropolis, the only sales and marketing-focused blog on Engineering News-Record’s website (ENR.com), reaching thousands of design and construction professionals nationwide.
Scott demonstrates extraordinary professional leadership through his CPSM certification (since 1993), FSMPS Fellow designation (Class of 2011), and pioneering role co-founding SMPS Central Pennsylvania in the early 1990s. One of the earliest CPSM credential holders and among the first wave of SMPS Fellows, Scott helped establish professional services marketing infrastructure throughout Central Pennsylvania and has remained a dedicated volunteer leader for more than three decades.
His SMPS leadership journey includes serving on the SMPS national board of directors as Fellows Delegate and Director at Large (2016-2018), President of the SMPS Foundation (2011-2016), and SMPS Foundation Trustee. During his Foundation leadership, Scott championed groundbreaking research initiatives including co-authoring A/E/C Business Development – The Decade Ahead and leading the research that produced Sell. Do. Win Business: How A/E/C Firms are Using Staff to Win More Work. He served three times on the SMPS National Certification Committee, helping shape the CPSM program that has certified hundreds of AEC marketing professionals.
As a nationally recognized keynote speaker and thought leader, Scott has delivered over 300 presentations to national, regional, and local programs of organizations including SMPS, AIA, ACEC, AGC, ABC, CMAA, PSMJ, ROG, SDA, NCSEA, ASCE, PSLS, NFMT, USGBC, IFMA, and others. His presentations span topics including strategic planning, seller-doer culture, personal branding, business development mega trends, rainmaking for AEC professionals, and social selling strategies. He has keynoted major conferences including SMPS Southeast Regional Conference, SMPS Pacific Regional Conference, SMPS Heartland Regional Conference, AGC National Convention, and ACEC National Convention.
As one of the AEC industry’s most prolific authors, Scott has written or co-authored 20+ books including Reputation Design-Build: Creating Winning Personal Brands for Design, Engineering, and Construction Professionals (praised by industry leaders as “the definitive guide to personal branding in the A/E/C industry”), 10.5 Business Development Tools for Seller-Doers, Social Selling in the A/E/C Industry, Simplified Project Photography, and Marketing in the Building Industry. His published works also include dozens of ebooks, white papers, and SMPS Foundation research reports that advance professional services marketing knowledge.
Scott’s Marketropolis blog on Engineering News-Record’s website (ENR.com) represents the first and only sales and marketing-focused blog on ENR, known as “the bible of the design and construction industry.” Through Marketropolis and his regular contributions to Professional Services Management Journal (PSMJ), A/E Marketing Journal, Construction Executive, The Zweig Letter, and other industry publications, Scott has authored more than 500 articles and blog posts sharing actionable insights on marketing strategy, business development techniques, human resources, management, and industry trends.
Beyond his AEC industry leadership, Scott demonstrates exceptional community commitment through board service including President of Historic York Inc., Vice President of Main Street York, Secretary/Director of Leadership York, Director of York County Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Director of American Red Cross – York County Chapter. He has volunteered with York County Heritage Trust, William C. Goodridge Freedom House & Underground Railroad Museum, and numerous civic organizations, reflecting his dedication to historic preservation and community development.
His recognition includes Central Penn Business Journal Forty Under 40, Leadership York Outstanding Alumnus of the Year, SMPS Central PA Keystone Award (2015), and SMPS Philadelphia Supporting Member Award. His educational foundation includes a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Penn State University and a Certificate in Professional Photography from the New York Institute of Photography, combining business acumen with creative visual communication expertise.
