Melissa leads comprehensive brand strategy and business development for Champlin Architecture, a full-service firm providing architecture, planning, interior design, and structural engineering across Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Virginia. As Principal and member of the firm’s Board of Directors, she develops targeted marketing strategies with each market team, creating distinctive opportunities in civic and cultural, education, healthcare, living, hospitality, workplace, and worship sectors.
Her expertise spans strategic business development, brand management, proposal leadership, and community liaison work for complex public and private sector projects. Melissa brings specialized knowledge in architectural marketing communications, with deep experience supporting multidisciplinary design teams serving educational institutions, healthcare systems, civic facilities, and religious organizations.
With over 35 years of AEC industry experience, Melissa has built marketing excellence at Cincinnati’s premier architectural firms while maintaining active engagement in professional development, thought leadership, and industry research that advances the entire AEC marketing profession.
Melissa demonstrates exceptional leadership at the highest levels of the AEC marketing profession. She served as President of the SMPS Society Board of Directors (2019-2020), leading the national organization representing over 7,000 professionals during a transformative period. Her national service also includes Past President of the SMPS Foundation and continued leadership in research initiatives advancing the profession.
As a Fellow of SMPS (named 2010), Melissa represents the highest level of experience and leadership in professional services marketing. She was one of the researchers and authors for the SMPS Foundation’s influential publication “A/E/C Business Development: The Decade Ahead,” contributing strategic insights that shape industry practice nationwide.
Her thought leadership extends across the profession through extensive conference presentations at SMPS Build Business, regional conferences (Heartland, Pacific, Southern, Southeast, Southwest), AIA Ohio Valley Regional Conference, and numerous chapter programs. Melissa has authored articles on business development and marketing for professional publications while serving as a featured speaker and workshop leader.
At the chapter level, Melissa served as Past President of SMPS Greater Cincinnati, maintaining active committee involvement and mentoring the next generation of marketing professionals. Her community leadership includes board service with the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Past President of CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women) of Greater Cincinnati, and volunteer work with Carnegie Arts Center supporting Suits That Rock—an initiative raising nearly $1 million for children’s arts education programs.
