Professional expertise

Jodi brings 25+ years of specialized marketing expertise to architecture, engineering, and construction firms through Jodi Sommers Marketing, her independent consultancy launched in 2023. As a self-described “serial solo marketer,” she pioneered marketing departments as the first marketer hired at four separate AEC firms, developing comprehensive expertise in building marketing functions from the ground up for organizations ranging from architects and contractors to sustainable design firms and multidisciplinary engineering practices.

Her consulting practice delivers strategic marketing planning, proposal and interview leadership, cause marketing campaigns that integrate nonprofit support with business development goals, client feedback surveys, perception studies, and LinkedIn strategy development. With a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business and LEED Green Associate certification, Jodi brings specialized knowledge in sustainable design marketing and environmental consciousness to her AEC marketing expertise.

Her career spans diverse AEC sectors including commercial construction, sustainable design, energy analysis and commissioning, and multidisciplinary engineering serving Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. This breadth of experience enables effective marketing strategy development for firms at any stage of marketing maturity, from startups requiring foundational marketing infrastructure to established practices seeking innovative approaches to business development and community engagement.

Industry leadership

Jodi demonstrates exceptional professional leadership through her CPSM certification, extensive SMPS Oregon involvement, and pioneering work in cause marketing for the AEC industry. Her chapter service includes years on the SMPS Oregon Programs Committee, where she received the chapter’s MVP Award for outstanding contributions including planning the complex Fall panel on Trends in Hospitality, securing panelists and moderators, and developing comprehensive discussion frameworks. Committee colleagues praised her reliability, strategic thinking, willingness to challenge conventional approaches, and creative problem-solving abilities that consistently benefited chapter programming.

Her thought leadership extends beyond SMPS through featured appearances on industry podcasts, including the Professional Services Marketing (PSM) podcast episode “Doing Good Things with Cause Marketing” (Episode 275, August 2024) and the “Solo Marketer” panel discussion, where she shared insights on finding balance and success as a department of one. These platforms showcase her expertise in the unique challenges and opportunities facing solo marketers in AEC firms.

Jodi’s leadership in professional marketing associations includes serving as President of the Southwest Oregon Chapter of the American Marketing Association, demonstrating commitment to marketing excellence beyond the AEC sector. She also led a sustainable business organization in Eugene, Oregon for three years, reflecting her passion for environmental stewardship and community impact.

Her pioneering work in cause marketing—the strategic integration of nonprofit support with marketing and employee engagement goals—represents innovative thinking that advances the entire AEC marketing profession. By developing frameworks that help firms achieve business development objectives while supporting meaningful community causes, Jodi has created a distinctive approach that resonates with values-driven AEC firms throughout the Pacific Northwest.
