Professional expertise

David leads business development and marketing strategy for ERMCO, Inc., one of the top electrical, systems, and automation contractors in the United States. As Director of Business Development & Marketing since 2013, he creates strategies for pursuing and securing local and national project opportunities while driving corporate initiatives for this employee-owned company with $332 million in annual revenue (2024) and over 300 employees.

His extensive expertise spans strategic planning, business development leadership, marketing strategy execution, and high-performing team building with specialized knowledge in electrical construction, low voltage systems, and building automation markets. David brings exceptional capability to position firms effectively in competitive marketplaces, executing strategic marketing plans that align with corporate goals including branding, digital presence, and customer relations. He collaborates closely with leadership, preconstruction, and operations to secure transformative projects spanning sports stadiums, data centers, healthcare facilities, and major infrastructure.

With 25+ years of AEC industry experience, David has contributed to marketing and business development excellence throughout his career at prominent construction firms including F.A. Wilhelm Construction (11 years), Synthesis Incorporated, and now ERMCO. His comprehensive understanding of the design and construction industry from architectural, engineering, and construction perspectives enables him to build effective strategies that drive growth. David’s leadership has supported ERMCO’s evolution from regional contractor to national powerhouse, contributing to major projects including Lucas Oil Stadium, Barclays Center, Toyota Center, and data center developments totaling $400+ million.

Industry leadership

David demonstrates exceptional professional leadership through his CPSM certification (June 2000), FSMPS fellowship designation (May 2011), and more than 20 years of active SMPS engagement at local, regional, and national levels. His sustained commitment to professional development and industry advancement reflects both his personal dedication and his ability to recruit and empower volunteers, creating ripple effects that benefit the entire AEC marketing profession.

As past president of SMPS Indiana Chapter, David taught the importance of recruiting great volunteers and empowering them to own initiatives rather than attempting to manage everything personally. His leadership philosophy centers on helping people understand and use their strengths, creating sustainable volunteer organizations that continue to thrive beyond any single leader’s tenure. David has served on planning committees for multiple SMPS Heartland Regional Conferences, including the 2010 conference, and has presented at regional conferences in St. Louis, Austin, and other markets throughout the Midwest and beyond.

David is a graduate of The Pinnacle Experience, SMPS’s premier executive symposium for senior marketing and business development leaders with 10-15+ years of experience. His testimonial for The Pinnacle reflects his commitment to professional growth: “The Pinnacle Experience challenged me to stretch my mind in new ways.” This elite program brings together thought leaders to challenge the status quo, brainstorm fresh ideas, and network with peers both inside and outside the AEC industry.

Throughout his 25+ year career, David has witnessed and contributed to significant evolution in AEC marketing practices. His educational background from Ball State University (1984-1988) combined with extensive professional development through SMPS programs has equipped him to lead during periods of industry transformation. His leadership has been instrumental in ERMCO’s growth, particularly as the company joined the Electric Roundtable peer group in 1998—a relationship David cites as crucial to ERMCO’s development through shared knowledge, mentorship, and industry connections.

David’s thought leadership extends beyond traditional marketing boundaries to encompass strategic positioning, relationship building, and organizational development. His 12+ years at ERMCO has contributed to the company’s evolution from $69.7 million in revenue to $331.92 million (2024), with national recognition including 2025 Top Notch Contractor of the Year by the Indiana Subcontractors Association.
